If a hub let go early, the bearing usually wasn't the whole story β something around it was. Find that, fit a hub that's warrantied for life, and this stops being a job you ever do again.
Here is every reason we see factory and budget hubs come back early, ranked roughly by how often it's actually the cause.
1. Bigger tires with the wrong offset
This is number one and it isn't close.
A wheel bearing is designed around a load applied at a known distance from its centerline. Push the wheel outboard with a negative-offset wheel or a spacer and you lengthen the lever arm the tire has on the bearing. The vertical load doesn't change β the moment does, and moment is what kills races.
Going from a factory +30mm offset wheel to a β12mm aftermarket wheel moves the tire's centerline outboard by roughly 1.6 inches. On a truck that already carries 3,000 lb on the front axle, that is a meaningful increase in bearing load every single mile, and it never stops.
Add tire weight on top. A 35x12.50 on a 20-inch wheel can run 40β50 lb heavier per corner than the factory setup. More unsprung mass means bigger shock loads through every pothole.
What to do about it: you don't have to run stock wheels. Run the least negative offset that clears your brakes and steering, skip the spacers if you can, and fit a hub built for that load rather than one specced for a stock truck. Buy the heavy-duty bearing the first time and the tire package stops being a liability.
2. It was installed with an impact gun
The axle nut is not a lug nut. On most late-model trucks it sets the preload on the bearing stack, and the spec is a real number β frequently in the 150β200 lb-ft range, sometimes with a specific tightening sequence.
Rattle it on with a 1,200 lb-ft impact and you have crushed the internal spacer or over-preloaded the races. It will feel perfect on the lift, and it will be noisy long before anything should be.
The opposite is just as bad. An under-torqued axle nut lets the hub move on the shaft, and now you have fretting on the splines and a bearing seeing shock loads it was never designed to eat.
What to do about it: torque wrench, factory spec, new axle nut if it's a staked or single-use design. This is a five-minute step that decides whether you do the job again.
3. Water got in
Unit bearings are sealed, not submersible. The seal is designed to keep grease in and road spray out. It is not designed to hold back a foot of standing water while the hub is hot and the air inside is contracting.
Drive through a creek with hot brakes and the pressure differential pulls water past the seal lip. Water plus grease plus steel equals a rusted race, and rusted races spall.
Salt does the same thing slower. Trucks in the Rust Belt lose hubs to corrosion pitting on the outer flange and seal surface years before the bearing itself is worn out.
What to do about it: if you actually cross water, let the truck cool before you hit it, and expect hubs to be a maintenance item. After a salt season, pull a wheel and look at the seal area.
4. Somebody hammered it out
Rusted-in hubs are a fact of life. The wrong way to remove one is to beat on the new one going in.
Driving a new unit bearing home by striking the outer flange sends the impact straight through the balls and into the races. That's called brinelling β tiny dents in the race surface at every rolling-element position. It spins fine, feels fine, and then starts humming, because every one of those dents is now a stress riser.
What to do about it: pull the old one with a slide hammer or a proper hub puller. Clean the bore in the knuckle down to bare metal, put a light film of anti-seize on the bore only, and draw the new hub in with the bolts. If it needs persuasion, persuade the knuckle, not the bearing.
5. It's carrying a plow or a tow rig it wasn't specced for
Front-axle load with a plow hung off the front bumper can exceed the factory FAWR before you've touched the throttle. Trucks that plow eat front hubs. So do trucks that spend their life at max tongue weight, because the rear squat pitches load forward every time you brake.
What to do about it: nothing exotic. Just stop expecting an OE-replacement-grade bearing to survive commercial duty and buy the heavy-duty unit.
6. The alignment is out
Camber that's out by a degree loads one side of the bearing harder than the other for the entire life of the part. Same with a bent knuckle after a curb strike, or a cheap leveling kit that changed camber and never got a proper alignment afterward.

7. It was just a cheap bearing
After all of the above, some of them really are just bad parts. The failure modes are consistent: a seal that's a single lip instead of a proper multi-lip design, races that weren't through-hardened deep enough, a rolling-element complement one row short, or grease that's a general-purpose lithium instead of a high-temperature bearing grease.
You can't inspect for any of that from the outside. The box looks the same.
