Super Duty Front Hubs: Four Ways to Order the Wrong One

Year range, thread pitch, drive type, and whether somebody already swapped your knuckles. Get all four right and a Super Duty front hub bolts on in an afternoon. Get one wrong and you find out with the truck on stands.

There are four ways to order the wrong front hub for a Super Duty, and three of them look identical in a photo. Year range, thread pitch, drive type, and whether somebody already swapped your knuckles. Get all four right and the part bolts on in an afternoon.

Here's the decision tree we use when a customer calls with a VIN and a noise.

Every one of those breaks is a real engineering change, not a catalog convenience. The parts do not swap.

1. The 1999–2004 thread trap

This is the one that catches people. Early Super Duty front hubs came with two different wheel stud thread pitches, and the year alone will not tell you which one you have.

You need to look. Pull a lug nut off and count threads, or measure the stud. If you have the old lug nuts, the thread pitch is stamped or measurable directly — and if somebody has already replaced studs at some point in the truck's life, the truck may not match what the factory shipped.

Order the wrong one and the hub physically bolts to the knuckle. You just can't put your wheels back on. That discovery happens at the worst possible moment, with the truck on stands.

Rule: on a 1999–2004, verify the thread before you order. Every time.

2. 2WD trucks are a different animal

A 2WD Super Duty has no CV axle, no locking hub, and a completely different front bearing arrangement. If someone hands you a part number for a 4WD hub and your truck is a single-rear-wheel 2WD, none of the year ranges above apply to you.

Check the sticker in the door jamb or look under the truck. If there's a differential up front, you're 4WD.

3. Dually vs single rear wheel

The rear is obviously different. The front usually isn't, on the bearing itself — but F-450 and F-550 chassis diverge, and a dually F-350 and an F-450 are not the same truck underneath even in the same model year.

If your truck has a badge with a 4 or a 5 in it, confirm before ordering.

4. Somebody already changed something

Used trucks are archaeology. Common finds:

  • Knuckles swapped from another year during a repair or a rebuild
  • Manual locking hub conversions on trucks that came with auto hubs
  • Studs replaced with a different pitch or length for aftermarket wheels
  • A previous owner's "close enough" hub that has been grinding for two years

If the truck is new to you and the part numbers don't match what the year should be, believe the truck, not the catalog.

Torque specs worth writing on the fender

Super Duty front ends have more torque-critical fasteners than most. These are the numbers people get wrong:

Target end play after adjustment is roughly 0.001–0.010 in, and rolling torque on the hub and rotor should stay under about 20 in-lb. Verify against your service manual for your exact year — Ford revised this procedure more than once.

Skipping the rotate-while-torquing step is the most common mistake. It's what seats the rollers evenly. Torque it static and the preload is a guess.

How to know for certain before you buy

Three ways, in order of how much we trust them:

  1. Pull the old part and read it. Nothing beats the number cast or stamped on the hub you're replacing.
  2. Run the year, make and model through the fitment search at the top of any page on this site. It filters to what actually bolts on for your platform — a wrong part won't even appear.
  3. Call us with the VIN. Faster than a forum thread and we'll tell you if there's a known split in your year.
