GM HD Front Hub Replacement: The Real Job

Book time is ninety minutes. On a truck that's seen ten winters, plan for four hours. Here's the Silverado and Sierra 2500/3500 front hub job with the parts that actually fight you — the ABS sensor, the three bolts, and a hub rusted into its bore.

Book time on a GM HD front hub is about an hour and a half. On a truck that's seen ten winters, plan for four. The bearing isn't what makes this job long — it's the three bolts behind the knuckle and the fact that the hub is rusted into its bore like it was pressed there at the foundry.

This is the version of the job with the parts that actually fight you, for 2001–2026 Silverado and Sierra 2500/3500.

What you need before you start

  • The hub for your body style — 2001–2007 classic, 2007–2010 new body, 2011–2019, and 2020–2026 are not the same part
  • 15mm 12-point socket for the hub bolts, 36mm socket for the axle nut (check yours — some are 35mm)
  • Breaker bar, torque wrench that reads to at least 200 lb-ft
  • Slide hammer with a hub adapter, or a bolt-on hub puller
  • Penetrating oil, a wire wheel, anti-seize
  • New axle nut

Spray the hub bolts and the axle nut the night before. It genuinely helps.

Step 1: break the axle nut loose on the ground

Wheel on, truck on the ground, break the axle nut before you jack anything up. Trying to hold a wheel still in the air while you lean on a breaker bar is how people bend rotors and pull trucks off jacks.

Crack it loose, then raise the truck, support it on stands, and pull the wheel.

Step 2: caliper and rotor

Unbolt the caliper bracket, lift the whole assembly off, and hang it from the frame with a bungee or a piece of wire. Do not let it hang by the hose. Rubber brake lines fail from the inside where you can't see it.

The rotor is probably rusted to the hub face. Two options: hit it with a dead blow from behind, or run two bolts into the threaded jack holes if your rotor has them. If it's fused, leave it — on these trucks the rotor will come off with the hub as an assembly and you can separate them on the bench.

Step 3: the ABS sensor — slow down here

This is where most of the money gets lost on this job. On 2011+ trucks the wheel speed sensor sits in a bore on the back of the knuckle, and after a few years it is corroded solid.

Do not pry it out with a screwdriver. Do not twist it with pliers. If you break the sensor off in the knuckle you have gone from a $200 job to a very bad afternoon with a drill and an extractor.

Instead: unbolt the retaining screw, soak the sensor bore in penetrating oil, and twist the sensor to break the corrosion bond before you pull straight out. Rocking it a few degrees each way beats yanking on it every time. If it won't budge, keep soaking and go do something else for twenty minutes.

Some trucks route the sensor harness through the hub itself, in which case it comes out with the assembly and you're fine.

Step 4: the three bolts

Three 15mm 12-point bolts hold the hub to the knuckle from the back side. Access is tight, the heads round off if your socket is worn, and on 4WD trucks the axle shaft is in the way of a straight shot.

Use a six-point-fitting 12-point socket in good condition, and use a breaker bar rather than an impact for the first crack — an impact hammering on a rounded head finishes the job of rounding it.

Turn the steering to full lock one way or the other to open up the angle. On some model years you'll need a wobble extension.

Step 5: getting the hub out of the bore

The bolts are out and the hub hasn't moved. That's normal. The flange is rusted into the knuckle bore.

What works:

  1. Slide hammer with a hub adapter. Bolt it to the wheel studs and work it out. This is the correct tool and it's worth owning.
  2. The bolt trick. Thread the three hub bolts back in a few turns, then hit the bolt heads — you're pushing the hub out from behind without deforming the flange.
  3. Heat, carefully. A torch on the knuckle (not the hub) expands the bore. Keep it away from the ABS harness and the CV boot.

What doesn't work: beating on the wheel studs. You'll bend them, and now you're pressing studs too.

Step 6: clean the bore. Actually clean it.

This step gets skipped and it's the reason the next hub is even harder to remove.

Wire-wheel the knuckle bore down to bright metal. Get the rust ridge at the outer lip. The new hub should slip in with hand pressure — if you have to draw it in with the bolts, the bore isn't clean enough.

A light film of anti-seize on the bore only. Not on the flange face, not on the bolt threads unless you're adjusting torque for it, and never on the wheel studs.

Step 7: install and torque

Seat the hub, start all three bolts by hand, then tighten in a cross pattern. Torque specs vary by year and you should verify against your service data, but the ballpark on these trucks is:

Caliper bracket bolts are the one to look up rather than guess — the figure differs between the HD brake systems and the half-ton spec that turns up in most search results, so pull it from factory service data for your exact year and brake configuration. New axle nut every time. They're a few dollars and most are single-use by design.

Step 8: before you drive it

  • Pump the brake pedal until it's firm before you move — the caliper pistons are retracted
  • Clear the ABS codes and confirm the light goes out above 25 mph
  • Re-torque the lug nuts after 50 miles
  • Listen. A new hub should be silent. If it isn't, you have a second problem.

While you're in there

The knuckle is already stripped. This is the cheapest time you will ever have to do ball joints, and if it's leveled or lifted, it's the right moment to look at upper control arms and bushings too.

Doing them separately means paying the teardown twice.
