Why Upgrade Your GM HD Truck's Suspension?
The Silverado 2500HD, Silverado 3500HD, Sierra 2500HD, and Sierra 3500HD are purpose-built work trucks. GM engineers the factory suspension to handle heavy payloads and towing — which means it's a compromise. Unloaded, the ride can feel stiff and choppy. Off-road, the factory setup limits articulation and ground clearance. And if you want to run larger tires, the stock geometry simply won't accommodate them.
The good news: the aftermarket for GM HD suspension is deep and well-developed. Whether you want a mild leveling kit for better stance, a full lift for off-road capability, or upgraded shocks for a smoother tow, there's a solution for your build.
Know Your Platform
GM HD trucks span multiple generations, each with different suspension architecture:
- 2011–2019 (K2 platform) — Independent front suspension (IFS) with torsion bars. Leveling is done via torsion bar keys or strut spacers depending on the specific setup.
- 2020–present (T1 platform) — Independent front suspension with coil springs and front struts. More modern geometry, wider aftermarket support for strut spacers and UCAs.
Always confirm your model year before purchasing suspension components — fitment is generation-specific.
Suspension Upgrade Options for GM HD Trucks
1. Leveling Kit (1.5"–2.5" Front Lift)
The most popular and affordable upgrade. A leveling kit raises the front of the truck to eliminate the factory rake and create a level or slightly nose-up stance. Benefits include:
- Improved front tire clearance (most HD trucks can fit 35" tires with a 2" level)
- More aggressive stance without sacrificing towing geometry
- Minimal impact on ride quality compared to a full lift
For T1-platform trucks (2020+), strut spacer kits are the most common approach. For K2-platform trucks, torsion bar key kits or strut spacers are available depending on trim level.
2. Lift Kit (3.5"–6"+ Front Lift)
A full lift kit provides significantly more front lift than a leveling kit and typically includes upgraded upper control arms (UCAs), longer struts or strut extensions, and rear blocks or add-a-leafs to level the rear. Benefits include:
- Clearance for 37"–40"+ tires depending on lift height and wheel offset
- Improved off-road articulation and approach angles
- Corrected CV axle angles when paired with UCAs
Important: Larger lifts require an alignment and may require additional modifications (differential drop, brake line extensions, etc.). Always use a quality kit from a reputable manufacturer.
3. Upper Control Arms (UCAs)
Aftermarket UCAs are one of the most impactful upgrades for lifted GM HD trucks. The factory UCAs are designed for stock ride height — when you add lift, the geometry changes and the factory UCAs can bind, limit travel, and accelerate ball joint wear.
Aftermarket UCAs are typically longer, use heavier-duty ball joints, and are designed to work with lifted geometry. They restore proper caster, improve alignment specs, and increase suspension travel. If you're running more than 2.5" of lift, UCAs are strongly recommended.
4. Upgraded Shocks & Struts
Factory shocks on GM HD trucks are tuned for loaded, on-road use. Upgrading to performance shocks improves:
- Unloaded ride quality — Less harsh and choppy when running empty
- Off-road performance — Better damping over rough terrain
- Towing stability — Reduced sway and bounce when towing heavy loads
Look for shocks with a valving tune appropriate for your use case — daily driving, towing, or off-road. Remote reservoir shocks offer the best performance for serious off-road use.
5. Rear Suspension Upgrades
GM HD trucks use a solid rear axle with leaf springs. Common rear upgrades include:
- Add-a-leaf kits — Add a leaf to the factory pack to increase load capacity and reduce sag under heavy payloads
- Overload springs — Activate under heavy load to prevent bottoming out
- Rear blocks or lift blocks — Used to level the rear when running a front lift kit
- Replacement leaf spring packs — Full replacement for worn or sagging factory springs
Tire Sizing Guide for Lifted GM HD Trucks
One of the main reasons GM HD owners lift their trucks is to run larger tires. Here's a general guide:
- Stock / No lift — Up to 33" tires (factory fitment on some trims)
- 1.5"–2" level — 33"–35" tires with proper wheel offset
- 3.5"–4" lift with UCAs — 35"–37" tires
- 5"–6"+ lift — 37"–40"+ tires (may require fender trimming)
Wheel offset and backspacing play a major role in fitment. Always verify clearance for your specific combination before purchasing tires and wheels.
What to Do After Installing Suspension Upgrades
- Wheel alignment — Required after any suspension modification. A proper alignment protects your tires and ensures the truck tracks straight.
- Inspect CV axles — Increased lift angle puts more stress on CV axles. Inspect them periodically and replace if you notice clicking or vibration.
- Check wheel bearings — Larger, heavier tires increase the load on wheel bearings. Inspect them regularly, especially if you run off-road.
- Re-torque suspension hardware — After the first 500 miles, re-torque all suspension fasteners. New hardware can settle slightly under load.
