Is Your CV Axle Failing? Here's How to Replace It
A CV (Constant Velocity) axle assembly is one of the hardest-working components on your truck or off-road rig. It transfers power from the differential to the wheel while allowing the suspension to move freely. When it fails, you'll notice it fast — and ignoring it can lead to costly drivetrain damage.
This guide covers everything you need to know to diagnose and replace a CV axle assembly on your truck or 4x4.
Signs of a Failing CV Axle
- Clicking or popping noise when turning — the most common symptom, especially during low-speed turns
- Vibration during acceleration — a worn inner joint often causes shuddering under load
- Grease on the inside of the wheel or under the vehicle — a torn CV boot allows grease to escape
- Clunking when shifting into drive or reverse — indicates excessive play in the joint
Tools & Parts You'll Need
- Floor jack and jack stands (never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack)
- Breaker bar and socket set
- Pry bar or CV axle puller
- Torque wrench
- Replacement CV axle assembly (see fitment options below)
- New axle nut (single-use — always replace)
- Penetrating oil (for stubborn hardware)
- Shop rags and gloves
Step-by-Step CV Axle Replacement
Step 1: Loosen the Axle Nut
With the vehicle still on the ground, break loose the center axle nut (also called the hub nut). This nut is torqued very tight — often 150–200 ft-lbs — so do this before lifting the vehicle. Use a breaker bar and the correct socket size for your application.
Step 2: Lift and Secure the Vehicle
Jack up the vehicle and place it securely on jack stands. Remove the wheel and tire.
Step 3: Disconnect the Brake Caliper and Rotor
Remove the brake caliper (hang it with a wire hook — don't let it hang by the brake line) and slide off the rotor. This gives you access to the hub and axle.
Step 4: Separate the Lower Ball Joint or Tie Rod (if needed)
Depending on your vehicle, you may need to disconnect the lower ball joint or outer tie rod end to swing the knuckle out far enough to extract the axle. Use a ball joint separator or pickle fork carefully to avoid damaging the boot.
Step 5: Remove the Axle Nut and Pull the Axle from the Hub
Remove the axle nut completely. Push the outer CV stub shaft through the hub. If it's stuck, use a rubber mallet or a hub puller — avoid hammering directly on the threads.
Step 6: Extract the Inner End from the Differential
Use a pry bar positioned between the inner CV joint and the differential housing. Give it a firm pop — the snap ring on the inner joint will release. Have a drain pan ready, as some fluid may drip from the differential.
Step 7: Install the New CV Axle
Slide the inner end of the new axle into the differential until you feel (and hear) the snap ring seat. Give it a tug to confirm it's locked in. Then guide the outer stub shaft through the hub.
Step 8: Reassemble and Torque
Reinstall the axle nut (use a new one), ball joint, tie rod, rotor, and caliper. Torque all fasteners to spec — especially the axle nut. Refer to your vehicle's service manual for exact torque values.
Step 9: Lower the Vehicle and Test Drive
Lower the vehicle and take it for a test drive. Make a few slow turns in both directions and listen for any clicking. Accelerate smoothly and check for vibration. If everything feels right, you're done.

Pro Tips from the Shop
- Always replace the axle nut — it's a prevailing torque nut designed for single use.
- Inspect the differential seal while you're in there. If it's leaking, now is the time to replace it.
- Check the wheel bearing — a worn bearing is often mistaken for a bad CV axle (and vice versa). If you're already this deep in the job, it's worth inspecting.
- Use OE-quality or better parts — cheap CV axles are a false economy. They wear faster and can fail suddenly.
